The City of Medicine Hat needed to design a replacement for the aging infrastructure in a 69 kV generation substation.
They hired Spark Power’s engineering services and expertise, and we completed the project in approximately 12 months and significantly helped to enhance the City of Medicine Hat’s operating system by creating a safer and more efficient environment.

solved it
- Engineered the replacement around continued operation, so the substation never had to come offline for the upgrade.
- Closed the documentation gap first, surveying the site and tracking down existing records before finalizing the design.
- Paired equipment replacement with a protection upgrade to current series, addressing reliability and safety in the same scope.

- 69 kV generation substation modernized in approximately 12 months. Breakers, CTs, PTs, and disconnect switches replaced and protection upgraded to current series.
- Operations maintained throughout the project. Phased approach kept the substation running with almost zero downtime.
- Existing assets fully documented. Site survey captured undocumented line structures so the City has accurate as-builts going forward.
- Safer, more efficient operating environment. Upgraded protection and replaced equipment reduced arc-flash exposure and improved reliability.
