Health, Safety, & Environment

How we keep our people, our customers, and the grid safe.

Safety is the first priority on every project, built into engineering, planning, fabrication, field execution, and handover, and measured with the same discipline as schedule and cost.

How we shape

our safety culture.

A safety culture is built by the choices people make in the office, in the shop, and in the field. Three pillars guide this culture:
  • Commitment

Continuous improvement of our safety management system, with senior leadership accountable for safety outcomes alongside schedule, quality, and cost.

  • Participation

Every employee, field or office, has full stop-work authority and is expected to use it. Safety reporting, hazard observation, and toolbox talks are tracked, not optional.

  • Integration

Safety is engineered into the work: site planning, electrical design, fabrication, mobilization, and energization.

Certifications that stand up

in audits and fieldwork

  • COR™ certified

Certificate of Recognition (COR™) — Spark is certified in Ontario, Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Manitoba, with annual internal and external audits of our health and safety management system.

  • ISO 9001

ISO 9001 quality and occupational health and safety management certifications within our US Renewables and Canadian High Voltage divisions.

  • Third-party prequal

Spark is prequalified through ISNetworld, Complyworks, and Avetta, the standard contractor screening platforms used by utility, industrial, and mission-critical owners.

  • NETA-accredited testing

Spark Testing is a NETA-accredited subsidiary delivering ATS and MTS-aligned acceptance and maintenance testing — work that demands strict adherence to safe-work procedures.

  • Electrical safety standards

Field work meets CSA Z462, NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584 arc-flash, NERC PRC-005, and the AHJ-specific standards in each province and state where we operate.

  • Environmental compliance

Site-level environmental controls integrated with safety planning — spill prevention, waste handling, and habitat protections aligned to or exceeding government legislation.

Qualified people.

Controlled processes. Reliable results.

Spark Power manages quality through an Integrated Management System (IMS) that applies across Technical Services and Renewables.
  • Plan and Control
    • Customer, regulatory, site, and OEM requirements defined before work starts
    • Approved plans, procedures, checklists, and acceptance criteria
    • Roles, responsibilities, and quality controls established for each scope
  • Correct and Improve
    • Findings and nonconformances documented and controlled
    • Root causes and corrective actions tracked to closure
    • Lessons learned used to strengthen procedures, training, and controls
  • Develop and Maintain competency
    • Training and qualification requirements defined by role and task
    • Development through internal programs, practical experience, OEM instruction, and approved external training
    • Required credentials and competency records maintained in centralized systems

Certified training verified

before mobilization

All our employees are trained in the required standards and procedures and are verified competent before being deployed to site. Competency requirements are documented within our Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Trained internally, certified externally

    • 15,000+ training hours delivered annually through SparkU (our internal LMS) and accredited external vendors.
    • Technician Development Program (TDP) and Renewables Accreditation Program (RAP) build competency.
    • Technicians progress through their trade with hands-on experience alongside qualified tradespeople, required technical and safety training, and career support.
  • Renewables Accreditation Program (RAP)

    • RAP offers structured, role-specific learning and documented field experience.
    • Takes Renewables Technicians from foundational Level 1 accreditation into specialized Level 2 pathways in Wind, Solar, or BESS, with micro-credentials and Level 3 Substation accreditation available.
  • Verified before mobilization

    • Mandatory competency verification before crews mobilize to high-risk scopes: HV substation work, BESS commissioning, wind work, and live energized environments.

24/7 safety platform

for field crews

Spark runs a centralized digital safety management system that every crew can reach from the field. Crews log:

  • Inspections
  • Hazard observations and near-miss reports
  • Job hazard analyses and work permits
  • Lockout-tagout and switching documentation
  • Incident reports
  • Daily toolbox talks

Reporting is part of how the work happens, not a separate workflow, and the data is audit-ready for owners and regulators on demand.

Accessible workplaces

and communications

Spark Power’s Multi-Year Accessibility Plan, developed by Spark’s Accessibility Advisory Committee, outlines how we prevent and remove barriers and meet current and future AODA requirements. The plan is available in alternative formats on request.
