From challenge to
completed project
AltaLink’s Windrise wind project needed the Windy Flats substation to carry more transmission capacity and connect reliably to the wider grid. Spark Power delivered the upgrade across high-voltage equipment, protection, and communications, bringing each system together on one schedule so the station was ready for new generation.
How we
solved it
Installed new 245/144kV LTC autotransformer (up to 400 MVA capacity). Installed 240kV & 138kV disconnect switches and 145kV 40kA dead tank breaker. Implemented breaker-and-a-half scheme with 138kV bus extension. Installed CVTs, CTs/PTs, surge arrestors, and associated civil foundations. Designed, installed, and commissioned upgraded protection systems (line, bus, transformer, breaker fail). Completed SCADA modernization, fibre optic OPGW installation, MPLS integration, and teleprotection between substations.
