From challenge to

completed project

The Rogers Centre, home to the Toronto Blue Jays and the world’s first fully retractable stadium roof, operated on the same aging control system since 1989. Reliability had steadily declined: the roof experienced prolonged and inconsistent opening and closing times, panels periodically slowed or stopped, and a stand-alone manual system made root cause troubleshooting difficult.

Spark Power was selected to lead the modernization after presenting project plans that demonstrated they had fully understood the real operational needs.

How we

solved it

  • Replaced all 76 DC motors with high-efficiency AC motors and VFD technology
  • Implemented a new state-of-the-art redundant Rockwell control system for automated roof retraction and extension
  • Installed a rooftop weather station to predict incoming weather and trigger timely roof operation
  • Installed 16 cameras providing real-time roof visibility from the operator’s office
  • Integrated data reporting and automated system diagnostics for real-time performance monitoring
  • Established ongoing preventive maintenance program and remote access capability for off-site troubleshooting

The metrics

that matter

  • Roof opens and closes reliably at an optimum 20 minutes. Opening and closing time cut in half, with consistent speeds and complete management confidence in the system.
  • Single operator one-touch control replaces multi-person manual operation. One building operator now initiates the full open/close process, a job that previously required more individuals.
  • Redundant control system eliminates single-point failure risk. A single motor issue can now be isolated without shutting down the full system, eliminating the cascading failures of the past.
  • Real-time diagnostics, weather integration, and remote access in place. Automated systems pull data and create reports; remote access allows troubleshooting without on-site attendance.
