From challenge to
completed project
AltaLink needed a brownfield 138/25kV substation in Sherwood Park expanded and brought up to current protection, control, and communications standards. Spark Power delivered it as one EPC scope, carrying the work from substation studies and civil through energization so the utility had one team answerable for the result.
How we
solved it
- Started with substation studies (grounding and AC/DC) so the design matched how the existing station actually performs.
- Sequenced equipment replacement and the ground grid expansion to fit around the energized site.
- Built the new control building as the hub for protection, SCADA and telecom, so the old and new systems were consolidated in one place.
- Fabricated SCADA cabinets in-house and carried out the telecom migration as part of the same scope, avoiding a separate handoff at cutover.
